KATE WINSLET
This is the experience of abbagirl's towards kate winslet:
Go see Kate in "Titanic", playing in theatres now! I've already seen it nine times and adore all 3 hours and 20 minutes of it.
Titanic News: Kate's latest film, "Titanic," is still setting box office records over three months after it hit theatres; it's now become the first movie ever to pass the $1 billion mark in domestic and international sales. And here in the U.S. "Titanic" has also recently moved up at last to #1 in the all-time ranking of (domestic) box office sales, beating out "Jurassic Park" (#3), "E.T." (#2), and finally, the previous #1, "Star Wars"! Wow!! This is especially impressive given that the totals for "Star Wars" include not only the original box office but also the profits from the 1997 rerelease. And, it remained #1 in the box office every week until it was finally beaten out by "Lost In Space" at the end of March.
The James Horner "Titanic" soundtrack also stayed at the top of the
charts for months and is now the best-selling instrumental film score of
all time, surpassing the past record set by "Chariots of Fire". Of course,
a large part of this is also due to the Celine Dion love theme, "My Heart
Will Go On," a huge hit single included on the album. There is also a 2nd
soundtrack planned for release around the time of the video (most likely
this fall or winter), which will include all the Irish music played by
the steerage band, Gaelic Storm, as well as more score music and music
from the 1st class string ensemble, I Salonisti. (Not to mention the bestseller
status of the new making-of-James Cameron's Titanic book, which I now own
as well.) Thanks to the incredible Titanic phenomenon, thousands of people
are being introduced to Kate for the first time; I've noticed extreme surges
in Kate fan activity on the net especially. What can I say? It's an amazing
film, and I'm overjoyed for its (and Kate's) success. Keep going out and
seeing it in the theatres, folks!
Oscar Report: The 1998 Academy Awards were held on Monday, March 23rd in Los Angeles, California, and of course, Kate was a nominee for Best Actress! However, she lost the Oscar stauette to Helen Hunt, for "As Good As It Gets," as was predicted by most of the industry and critics. *sigh* Kate will have her day eventually! Happily however, "Titanic" accumulated 11 awards (tying for the record of 11 wins with "Ben-Hur") out of its 14 nominations (tying for most nominations with 1950's "All About Eve"). It won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Sound, Best Sound Effects Editing, Best Editing, Best Costumes, Best Visual Effects, Best Dramatic Score, and Best Original Song, "My Heart Will Go On". The only nominations it did not win were Kate as Best Actress, Gloria Stuart as Best Supporting Actress (which shocked me and most of Hollywood, I think!), and Best Makeup, which went to "Men In Black". Interesting trivia - this marks the first time two actresses have been nominated for playing the same character (old and young Rose)! And, as Matt Lauer informed Kate on "The Today Show", Kate is now the youngest actress to ever have received 2 Oscar nominations; the previous record was Mickey Rooney's 2 nom's by the age of 23, so Kate beat him by a year.
Kate was present at the awards ceremony that night, although they didn't
interview her on the red carpet on the E! pre-shows (grrr, Joan Rivers!);
I hear they did get her on the VH1 pre-show, but I missed it. She wore
a gorgeous green gown designed by Alexander McQueen for Givenchy, along
with a lovely diamond necklace, with her long tresses curled. (My local
paper, The Ann Arbor News, even voted Kate the Best Dressed at the
Oscars!!) And, she was there on the arm of her new love interest, Jim Threapleton
(see below!), and I believe her parents came as well. She didn't get a
chance to come onstage that night, but sat with James Cameron and Gloria
Stuart and the "Titanic" bunch, and got hugged by many of the "Titanic"
winners on camera. All in all it was an exciting night for Kate fans!
Kate & Romance: Apparently Kate has a new beau! His name is Jim Threapleton, he's 24 (tall, blonde, and blue-eyed, prompting comparisons by some to Leo), and was an assistant director on "Hideous Kinky". Jim is an arts graduate from the North Yorkshire village of Grewelthorpe New Rippon. He told the London Daily Mail, "Yes its love. I feel very lucky, things like this don't come around very often in life and you've got to make the most of it. Hopefully our relationship is going to last a long time. The point is it's a very real thing we are both experiencing. Its great to finally get it out in the open. We were going to announce it at the Oscars but it's fine that it has got out now. We were surprised it hadn't come out before. From day one on the set we didn't make any secret of it. We think the best way is to be up front with everyone about it".
"I was working for a couple of weeks on 'Hideous Kinky'. The attraction
was instantaneous. We just had the same sense of humour and got on immediately.
One thing we have got in common is that we both love trout fishing. We
love going down to Cornwall on fishing trips. She might be a superstar
but she doesn't act like one." His mother Louise described Kate as lovely.
She said, "I am very pleased. They both seem happy and we are keeping our
fingers crossed for the Oscars."
Magazines: Kate was on the cover of the March
issue of Movieline!! The entire issue is devoted to "Young Hollywood,"
and features an in-depth story on Kate with lots of new pictures, and also
includes commentary on Kate's performance in "Heavenly Creatures" among
its discussion of the top 10 performances by an actor/actress under 30
in recent years. Kate was also on the cover of the March 5th issue of Rolling
Stone, lying in a lifeboat. There's a great interview inside as well
as many new pics.
The latest issue of Vanity Fair had a new pic (by legendary photographer
Annie Leibowitz) of Kate swimming underwater in a tank, and a paragraph
or two but not much of an article, unfortunately. It's a big, thick issue
devoted to Hollywood with quite a lot of stars on the cover - alas, not
Kate however.
Go see what Kate
Winslet movies are on TV this month!
Upcoming TV appearances: I don't know of anything at the moment!
Kate appeared on the Rosie O'Donnell show on Tuesday, January 13th, the Oprah Winfrey Show on Tuesday, January 20th (a terrific 1-hour special devoted entirely to "Titanic," with Kate, James Cameron, and Billy Zane as guests), the Tonight Show on the 20th, and Late Night With David Letterman on Friday, February 27th. (The pic at left is Kate looking lovely on Leno.) British viewers were able to see Kate on "The Clive James Show" on Sunday, March 8th, and on the program "Celebrity Ready, Steady, Cook" on BBC1 on March 4th at 7 pm, whipping up a recipe with mystery ingredients alongside a team of chefs - hopefully I'll get a tape of this soon! People have asked me for copies of these shows on video; I'm afraid I didn't tape them (I did watch them, though), but you can find good transcripts in the Media section of the Winsome World Kate site.
And, you may have spotted her at the Golden Globe awards ceremony on Sunday, Jan. 18th, as she was one of the many nominees from "Titanic" - which took home the statuettes for Best Picture: Drama and Best Director (James Cameron), as well as Best Score and Best Original Song (Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On")! Alas, Kate did not win for Best Actress (Leo also didn't win).
Golden Globe gossip: Sources say that Kate chatted up fellow nominee Matt Damon for quite a while at the event. Here's what Damon had to say (in the Detroit News) about the rumors of the two being an item: "I got romantically linked with Kate Winslet. What she really did was say, 'If you're ever in London, give me a call.' They made it sound like it was possibly a tryst. ... I talked to her after that article came out, and I told her we got linked. We were both laughing. She thought it was really cool." Kate also has raved about being able to meet such idols of hers as Daniel Day-Lewis and Julia Roberts, both of whom complimented her on her work. Kate wore this black lacy dress and a choker, and looked quite nice.
More Awards News: Kate was nominated for a SAG (Screen Actors Guild) award for Best Actress! You may recall that Kate won the SAG Best Supporting Actress award for 'Sense & Sensibility' back in 1996. These awards were shown on TNT on March 8th - Kate did not win, she lost to Helen Hunt ("As Good As It Gets"), and was not in attendance; neither was Leo. "Titanic" did not win for Best Motion Picture Ensemble either, but Gloria Stuart did win Best Supporting Actress, in a tie with Kim Basinger ("L.A. Confidential")! Congrats, Gloria!
Kate finally won a film award for her work on "Titanic" - yes, she was the winner of the Blockbuster Entertainment Award for Best Female - Drama! Hooray, Kate!! The awards were broadcast on Tuesday, March 10th on UPN, but in the two hours they only showed a portion of the awards, and Kate's category was not one of them. I just learned from the Blockbuster website that Kate won hers. She did not attend the awards either; James Cameron was there, as a presenter, and "Titanic" picked up quite a few: Leonardo DiCaprio won Best Male- Drama, Billy Zane won Best Supporting Male - Drama, and Kathy Bates won Best Supporting Female - Drama. Only Zane was shown in the broadcast, though.
Rumors: Lately there seems to be a rumor drifting
around about Kate possibly doing some theatre work later this year, in
London. Anyone know if this is at all true? I would be thrilled if it was;
I'd certainly love to go see Kate onstage in a show, and I know she does
have theatre experience and would probably welcome the change after a big
production like "Titanic".
Guess what? There's even a 1-800 toll-free hotline for all things Kate!!
Thanks to Jesse, you can call and

There's also a Kate newsgroup, at alt.fan.kate-winslet.
Site Excitement: A few people informed me that this site was mentioned in a March 8th New York Daily News article on "Titanic"!! As Rose would say, "How extraordinary!" I have yet to see the article myself, but here's a quote someone gave me: "There are also many sites devoted to Kate Winslet, perhaps the best is Abbagirl's Shrine to Kate Winslet (www.abbagirl.com/kate.html) with everything from breaking news to trivia to guides on her various other films." The best? Wow! I know mine is certainly not the best out there - that would have to be The Kate Winslet Show, I think, but I am very flattered. The site was also mentioned in the March 9th Chicago Daily Herald as well, in a sidebar on "Titanic" related sites; I have a print copy of this one. ("There's also a ton of sites devoted to Kate Winslet, including Abbagirl's Shrine To Kate Winslet. Address: http://www.abbagirl.com/kate.html.") I guess now I'm even more motivated to work on these pages and keep adding new stuff! I promise there'll be more info. on her films very soon...
